Huff N’ Puff is a jackpot slot based on an old English folktale “Three Little Pigs”. It was launched by SG Gaming in 2022 and became insanely popular in the US, to the point that two sequels (Huff N’ More Puff and Huff N’ Even More Puff) have been released to this point.

While the three pigs are the protagonists in the actual story, you’ll be siding with the big bad wolf in this game, as he can net you big instant prizes and potentially one of the four progressive jackpots by blowing the piglets’ homes away.

The biggest payouts are tied to the sole bonus feature of Huff N’ Puff – the Free Spins round. Collect Hard Hats so that the pigs can build their houses safely, and the sturdier the home, the bigger the prize.

Although I couldn’t find the official report on the game’s RTP score, my tests confirmed it’s floating around 95%. I must emphasize that Huff N’ Puff is a highly volatile slot that can eat hundreds of dollars in a flash, only to return all of your lost bets with a single payout from the bonus round (even if you don’t draw any pots).

Our review of Huff N’ Puff aims to take you through all the core features of this popular jackpot slot. Before we dive into the specs, let’s glance at its biggest draws and flaws:

Cons

  • Poorly-suited for low rollers
  • No special modifiers or bonus effects outside of free spins and jackpots

About Huff N’ Puff: Game Overview

The “Big Bad Wolf” appears in numerous tales. From The Boy Who Cried Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood to Peter and the Wolf and of course, The Three Little Pigs. Huff N’ Puff is completely molded after the Three Little Pigs – all three are included as protagonists, they’re building houses, and hide from the wolf.

The only element that’s not completely true to the folklore is that they’re wearing construction hats, which you’ll need to help them achieve if you want to enter the coveted Bonus Round with 6 free spins, instant prizes, and jackpots.

The slot machine itself doesn’t reveal much apart from the title and the door that’s keeping the wolf at bay. The yellow Construction Hats are the Bonus Symbols, and you’ll need to collect at least six in a single spin to get the piggies to start building houses and unleash the wolf. The slot doesn’t have any other bonus features, but the Free Spins round is so well-designed and exciting that I finally understood what made Huff N’ Puff so popular once I triggered it the first time.

The main issue with Huff N’ Puff is that it’s exclusively available in land-based casinos. It’s currently not playable anywhere online, and finding an accurate demo has been a massive challenge. If you’d like to see how it works, pays, and plays, you can try your luck at local brick-and-mortar casinos, or give Pragmatic Play’s Greedy Wolf a shot – it rocks almost the same features, and it looks a lot more polished than the original.

Huff N’ Puff Slot Information

Like other video slots, Huff N’ Puff allows you to choose your betting denomination before launching, and the options include 10c, 20c, 50c, and $1. The betting range spans from $0.75 to $75, scaling with the selected denominations up to $750 per spin. Simply tap the denomination you want, and you’ll be allowed to set your wager and start playing.

The visuals are decent but fall short of magical when compared to other modern video slots. We have cards and various construction props like toolboxes as minor symbols and the three piglets as the major ones. The Wolf is the Wild symbol and will help you connect bigger wins on adjacent reels.

Nines and tens are the lowest symbols, followed by Js, Qs, and Ks. The lowest majors are the construction cones and toolboxes while the highest are the three piglets, which are easy to distinguish – the “youngest” wears a green cap and seems to be relaxing on a log; the middle child wears a blue cap and has an axe slung on his back while the oldest (and top-paying) pig has a red background and a blue suit. The brothers are present in the entire trilogy while some symbols are replaced in newer versions (for example, the cones are replaced with a measuring tape in Huff N’ More Puff).

The game is played on a classic 3-row 5-reel grid, symbols pay from left to right, and you’ll need at least three symbols of the same suit on adjacent reels to bag a win. There are 40 fixed paylines, meaning that you shouldn’t expect sky-high wins on combos of just 3 or 4, even if you bag major winning symbols.

Huff N' Puff Slot Features

The original Huff N’ Puff has only two special features, including the Free Spins round and four progressive jackpots. The only bonus feature you can trigger in the base game is the Wild Wolf symbol, so let’s see how these mechanics work.

Wolf Wilds

The Wilds can appear in any reel during the base game. The Wolf can substitute for every paying symbol, but Hard Hats scatters are too much for him to chew.

Unfortunately, Wilds don’t have any special modifiers. They won’t randomly expand to cover your reels, carry multipliers, or stick, but they can help you stay afloat while hunting for bonus scatters. There’s a little animation of the wolf howling once he connects a win, but it looks a bit dated compared to today’s standards.

Hard Hats & Free Spins

The yellow hats with a little piggy logo are what you’ll want to keep an eye out for in this game. These are scatters that can take you to the coveted bonus round and unlock the possibility of winning one of the four jackpots.

What’s different in Huff N’ Puff compared to average video slots is that you’ll need at least 6 scatters to trigger the bonus game instead of just 3 or more. Fortunately, they usually come in pairs or cover entire reels, so getting the bonus isn’t exceedingly difficult. The problem is that scatters will often get in between your potential wins while not guaranteeing you’ll have enough to get your free spins.

Fortunately, the bonus game can be so generous that all the effort is worth it. Namely, you’ll start the round with 6 free spins, and whenever you draw at least 3 additional scatters, you’ll receive a free respin.

Bonus Round Prizes

Whenever any scatter drops into the playing field, the occupied cell with become bordered and will later become a house. Homes are “upgradeable” and start as humble straw houses (1 scatter); collect another scatter in the same field, and they’ll evolve into stick homes (2 scatters). Finally, if you manage to land 3 scatters in the same position, these homes will evolve into large mansions.

Each home the piggies built will give you an instant prize. The size of the prize is determined by the quality of construction. Straw houses, being the easiest to “puff out”, yield the lowest prizes. Stick homes are sturdier, so the Wolf will pay you even more if you help him tear them down.

The mansions are almost indestructible, so not only do they offer the largest prizes, but piggies will sometimes feel so secure that they’ll store their most precious jackpot coins inside them.

Progressive Jackpots

There are four progressive pots in Huff N’ Puff, including Mini, Minor, Major, and Grand jackpots. They’ll grow as long as at least one player is playing the game and typically boast solid seeds of 100x for Mini, 500x for Minor, around 1,500x for Major, and 15,000x for Grand.

The two smallest pots, Mini and Minor, can be won at any bet range and with any spin, even during the base game. If you win, you’ll see a notification on your screen, so you’ll need to call the casino’s staff to pay you cash or tickets, whichever you prefer.

Additionally, you can find jackpot tokens in the “houses” during the free spins. Tokens of the largest jackpots, Major and Grand, can only be found in better homes; I can only assume that Grand Jackpot symbols are exclusively available in mansions.

Game Specs: RTP & Volatility

The original Huff N’ Puff is a highly volatile game, but not nearly as much as its successors. As I mentioned, you’ll frequently see Hard Hats in places you don’t want them to be and in amounts you wish were higher.

Huff N’ Puff is so popular because when it does decide to pay, it pays its weight in gold. The instant prizes in the bonus game are just a cherry on top of a juicy cake since you’ll get to bag all your regular wins before the wolf decides to tear houses down.

I couldn’t find the official RTP score for this game, meaning that I can only provide an estimate of around ≈95% based on my tests.

200 Spins Test of Huff N’ Puff

I decided to test Huff N’ Puff with 200 spins to see what an average user experience would be like.

During my first 50-odd spins, I chose an average wager of $7.50. I had almost half a dozen empty hands before getting a decent streak with card-like symbol wins, which didn’t cover even half of what I staked.

I stuck with the same bet hoping to get to the bonus round, but the following 35+ spins drained my budget almost completely before I finally lined up six hard hats on the field.

During these 6 bonus spins, I earned pocket money with the help of Wolf Wilds, eagerly anticipating new scatters so that homes could be built and better prizes reaped. Even though I failed to create any mansions, I had about 5 straw houses and 7 stick homes by the end of the round, and then the Wolf came into the scene.

He initially blew away all the straw houses before proceeding to empty his lungs at wooden ones. I gained 120x of my bet back this way, even without scoring a single jackpot.

With the bonus round won, I returned to my pursuit of the second set of hard hat scatters, which took me roughly 70 spins to achieve. This time around, I had considerably more luck with respins and finally managed to land a gold-bordered mansion at the central reel. Though the other prizes weren’t impressive, I saw a coin gleaming from the mansion.

My first and only jackpot in the test drive of Huff N’ Puff was a Mini, netting me 100x of my wager out of the gate. Once again, I was back at the start line with minor profits on the side. The last 45 spins were a mix of empty hands and unenviable winning combinations, so in the end, I had less money than I initially had.

Nevertheless, this test proved to me that Huff N’ Puff is fair, but it’s also a test of patience.

Our Experts Verdict and Ratings

I find it interesting how such a simple game that can’t be played online or on mobile made such a huge splash among US slot enthusiasts.

Its theme is very niche and viscerally portrayed to emulate the aesthetics and feel of Three Little Pigs. The biggest of the four jackpots are quite hard to grab, but on the upside, the bonus round can be extremely generous. Let’s take a quick look at how Huff N’ Puff performs across the board.

Huff N’ More Puff vs the Original

Due to the exceptional popularity of the original Huff N’ Puff, SG launched a sequel the following year called “Huff N’ More Puff”. The second game in what’s now a trilogy brings the unique Wheel mechanic, which can be spun by drawing 3 buzzsaw symbols. This innovative feature expands on the original features with several in-game modifiers, such as Mansions and Mega Hats.

Jackpots are also included on this wheel, although they’re about the same size as in the original.

What I disliked in Huff N’ More Puff is that the developer reduced the basic symbol payouts, probably to make the game more balanced since new features have been implemented. My gripe with this approach is that we now have more scatters and symbols with lower values – effectively meaning that staying in the black is more difficult and triggering bonuses are almost a requirement to win.

Similar Games You Can Play Online in the US

If you can’t find Huff N’ Puff at your local casinos or simply prefer gaming from the comfort of your home, I have a few recommendations that are very similar to the original. In fact, they bring several innovative features that make winning easier, such as evolving wilds or purchasable bonuses.

Pragmatic Play’s Greedy Wolf and Quickspin’s Big Bad Wolf are also available at sweepstakes casinos. This means that you can play them for free and win real cash prizes without spending any money.

Pragmatic Play’s Greedy Wolf

Greedy Wolf Slot

Although calling Greedy Wolf a “replica” of Huff N’ Puff is one way to look at it, I’d argue that this slot is a huge improvement on the original, even more so than Huff N’ More Puff.

The only thing that’s similar between the two is that you have piggies chased by a wolf. They will build homes (with prizes) in the bonus round, but triggering the bonus is significantly easier.

Firstly, the game is played on a 4×5 grid, meaning it has an extra row and that landing 6 scatters isn’t as damaging to the base game. Secondly, Greedy Wolf rocks an optional “Buy Bonus” variant that allows you to pay your wagers 1.25x of the original price to reduce the number of required scatters by 1.

Pragmatic Play stated that the official RTP of this game is 96.48%, which is higher than Huff N’ Puff’s rating.

Quickspin’s Big Bad Wolf

Big Bad Wolf Slot

Similar to Greedy Wolf, the only thing Quickspin’s Big Bad Wolf has in common with Huff N’ Puff is the same bonus round concept where the wolf blows houses away to reveal instant prizes.

This is a tumbler slot where piggies evolve into Wild symbols when they’re included in two subsequent winning combos. Theoretically, all 3 pigs can become Wilds if you manage to line up 6 wins in a single tumbling sequence.

What’s different is that this game has two unique bonus features. The Free Spins round awards 10 free spins with multipliers while the “Blowing Down the House” feature is activated by drawing Moon symbols.
