Lucky Penny is a game that wants to be fun above all else. It’s got a light-hearted Irish theme, ripe with your very own leprechaun that serves as the game’s mascot and guide. In my opinion, developers 3 Oaks nailed this one. The tumbling reels + pay anywhere combo pretty much guarantees engaging gameplay — and with the multiplier symbols, there’s a real feeling of excitement to every spin. And this is something that 3 Oaks specializes in. They have no overarching style, and are willing to go a little outside the box when it comes to designing games.

Of course, we have to touch on the sequel Lucky Penny 2. Though for my money, the sequel feels like a rare swing and a miss from 3 Oaks. To clarify, in isolation, there’s nothing wrong with it — but it is pretty much a mirror match of the original Lucky Penny with the same gameplay mechanics, RTP, and volatility. While the old saying does go “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, I feel like a sequel has to bring something new to the table. And while the mystery multiplier is technically new, it essentially just serves as a multiplier with a different animation.

Though with all that being said, that’s more of a Lucky Penny 2 problem. As the original, Lucky Penny gets the acclaim for its engaging mechanics, and that acclaim is well-deserved if you ask me.

Lucky Penny Slot Information

Lucky Penny is a 6-reel, 5-row slot. As previously mentioned, there are no paylines, with this game running off of a pay-anywhere system, wherein payouts are awarded whenever there are eight or more of any matching symbols on the reels.

I’m a big fan of 3 Oaks slots. And so in preparation for my 200 spins test for Lucky Penny, I decided to top up my account to 200 SC for a series of 200 1 SC spins.

Fortunately for me, it only took three spins to get my first win — and it was a pretty big one as I got 2.25 in wins plus an x10 and x4 multiplier, taking my win to 31.5 SC. The next 41 spins brought me back to earth a little bit, as I only managed a couple of small wins — however, it was spin number 45 that sent me to the stratosphere, with five scatter symbols awarding 20 free spins.

And continuing with my luck for the day, this would end up being my best bonus round across all slots for the year. Multipliers were coming thick and fast, and I was putting them to good work.

By the midway point, I was already on a 98x multiplier and with about 312 SC in profits — though things really reached their climax on free spin number 17, where a 25x and a 7x put me up to 192x and turned a 1.90 SC win into 364.80. I did end up getting another win on spin 20. However, without any multipliers, it paid out just 0.50 SC.

All in all though, by the end of the bonus, my wins had tallied up to 965.70 SC. Unsurprisingly, this would go down as the highlight of my 200 spins test — but it wasn’t the only high point of my session. On spin 91 I got a 17 SC win. And on spin 183 I got seven consecutive tumbles for a 29.5 SC win. These all helped to take my total profit to a frankly ridiculous 936.25 SC after 200 spins.

I was somewhat tempted to ride my luck and go into super free spins, however, in the end I decided to lock in my profits and call it a day. Ignoring my huge wins, I found that the average win was about 0.5-1.25 SC — with it being clear that the multipliers are pretty much mandatory to score big wins.

One thing that did surprise me was the hit rates. With high-volatility games, I find I usually get wins every eight or so spins. However here, I don’t think I ever went eight spins without a win — and would say I probably averaged out a win once every four spins.

Of course, I did run red hot. But even so, Lucky Penny definitely had more of a medium-volatility feel to me.
