Nevada Sweepstakes Casinos Legal Status

Governor Joe Lombardo signed Senate Bill 256 in June 2025, which took effect October 1, 2025, and closed off Nevada’s sweepstakes casino market. Unlike California and New York, which created new legislations, it leveraged existing gambling law.

Nevada courts can now order disgorgement of all profits to the state’s General Fund, certain offenses tied to facilitating illegal wagers were bumped from misdemeanor to gross misdemeanor, and out-of-state operators can be prosecuted just for accepting bets from Nevada residents.

Nevada’s licensed gambling industry aggressively pushed for sweepstakes casino bans. Sen. Rochelle Nguyen, who authored the bill, said the idea came out of conversations at gaming-industry conferences and with Nevada gaming leadership. When it hit the Senate Judiciary Committee, it drew backing from the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM), the Nevada Resort Association, the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling, and the Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

The American Gaming Association had already released a policy memo warning that sweepstakes operators “circumvent state gambling laws and regulatory frameworks” and cost states tax revenue, and AGA research pegged unregulated offshore and sweepstakes-style betting as draining over $17 billion from licensed operators in 2024 alone.

Land-based casinos, tribal gaming interests, and equipment makers all had the same complaint: sweepstakes platforms were running casino-style games without licensing fees, taxes, age-verification standards, or the responsible-gaming protocols regulated Nevada operators are legally required to fund.

Operators didn’t wait for the law to come into effect. VGW’s Chumba Casino and LuckyLand cut off Nevada purchases in January 2025 and were fully gone by April. What Legal Online Gaming Options Are There for Nevadans Currently?

Nevada runs the tightest gambling laws in the country because the industry is the state’s fiscal foundation. Nevada casinos pulled in $11.2 billion in gaming revenue in 2025, paying $1.14 billion in gaming taxes that fund education and public transit.

Nevada Gambling Laws

In Nevada, no form of gambling may occur involving real money changing hands unless it’s licensed and taxed by the state. This principle is applied more strictly in NV than almost anywhere else in the country.

Nevada is famous for land-based casinos, and more than 300 properties operate across the state, some of which we list below. The Silver State legalized gambling in 1931, and today the industry is overseen by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, which handles licensing, investigations, and enforcement, and the Nevada Gaming Commission.
