The main mechanic in Boom! is one of the most interesting I’ve seen in a long time – this certainly doesn’t work like a normal slot. We have a 5×4 grid and on each spin it fills with various strange monsters, so the idea is to shoot as many as you can to earn wins. Then the all important second aspect is a spinning reel beneath the grid – this decides whether you will get a weapon (there are dead symbols) and what type it’ll be.
Yes, the different weapons are Pistol, Shotgun, Flamethrower Torches, Sniper Rifle, Rocket Launcher, and BFG, and each has different capabilities. For example, the Pistol only takes out 2-3 random symbols and isn’t very effective for the bigger guys, while the Rocket Launcher destroys everything in a 3×3 radius.
I love the aesthetic on Boom! – it’s clearly inspired by Doom and other 90s video games. However, this slot really comes into its own in the bonus round where you get the addition of a meter, and by reaching certain milestones with the amount of monsters you take out, you gain powerful benefits. There can also be a reward for reaching all the way to the right-hand side of the grid, represented by the tabs with multipliers on. These are set to 1x in the base game as default, but they can be increased if a Wild lands on the row in question – the random values range from 2x to 100x.
In the base game the multipliers reset with each spin, but in the bonus round they persist, leading to higher totals and bigger wins. It’s a simple but elegant system, and the cartoon fantasy/knight theme is fun and suits the gameplay perfectly.
3. Professor Lightning (Massive Studios / RTP: 96.50% / Max win: 20,000x)
This is one of the most visually stimulating slots I think I’ve ever played. There’s a real sense of electricity as rows on the top and left edges of the grid light up to create Multiplier Lightning at the points where the beams cross. This game has hints of Sugar Rush with its highlighted multiplier squares, but the multis don’t grow from wins – they build from additional bolts of electricity sent in from the top and left-hand sides of the grid. If the same space gets hit repeatedly, you can end up with some massive multipliers. Ideally you want plenty of cascades, as this gives more chances for the multis to grow.
In the bonus round (triggered by landing 3-5 Scatters), the multipliers build for the duration of the feature. There are even Super Lights, which can spread multipliers across the grid or collect them in to a single spot. It’s utter chaos at times, but a really satisfying way to see patterns and randomness collide into potential wins.
With a 20,000x max win and high volatility, you could be in for some big payouts if everything lines up.
4. Drop the Boss 2: Maralago (Mirror Image Gaming / RTP: 96.15% / Max win: 10,000x)
This is one of several Drop the Boss games from Mirror Image, and I’d say it’s perfect for millennials thanks to clear inspirations from Grand Theft Auto and South Park! No two journeys down to the bottom will be the same. Will they hit a Jetpack and go flying up the screen to collect more Cash and Gold Bars, or will they hit the Mines to end your turn? There are various areas to reach at the bottom too, including a golf minigame.
With a hilarious, over-the-top, satirical sense of humor, and the addition of other notable politicians, this is one game that could easily have you laughing all night long.
5. Dragonspire: Frostfall (Paperclip Gaming / RTP: 96.00% / Max win: 20,000x)
We end with one of the most played slots on Stake.us at the time of writing, and for very good reason. This excellent game is the second in the Dragonspire series and combines many of the things that Paperclip does so well: fun cartoon visuals, an epic fantasy theme, and interesting and innovative game mechanics, all wrapped up in a package that keeps you spinning.
Dragonspire: Frostfall is set on a 5×5 grid with a cluster pays core, and it reminds me of Pragmatic Play’s Gems Bonanza. I say that because on every spin there are Powerup Positions in the back of the grid, and when wins land on those squares, you unlock rewards – like the destruction of all low-paying symbols, or the spawning of 2-5 Wilds.
Also, there’s a Bonus Meter, just like Gems Bonanza, and filling it via cluster wins triggers the first stage of the free spins. Then you have to land more wins on a certain pattern of squares to trigger a 2×2 Dragon Wild that falls from the top to the bottom of the grid.
