The Story Behind Deck of Dice
Deck of Dice isn’t a brand-new idea created specifically for Modo.us. The original, non-digital version came from Carmelyn Calvert, a grandmother from rural Illinois who thought up the concept of putting an entire deck of playing cards onto 9 6-sided dice.
She worked out which cards should appear on each die so that the system could still produce the different poker hands you’d expect from a conventional deck. That means 9 dice effectively contain 54 faces in total – enough for the 52 cards in a standard deck plus 2 jokers.
Since then, the idea has been brought to the digital gaming sphere by Tom Donelan, and his studio PRIZEBOSS has continued developing it.
By 2018, Donelan had already released Shake It Up! Poker Dice on Facebook, a versus game where players could roll the dice up to 3 times to try to create poker hands and beat their opponents. Then the concept moved into real-prize gaming, with Roll & Win Dice – Clash for Cash on the Skillz platform in 2024.
